Flame Nebula (NGC 2024)

The star Alnitak, seen as the bright star on the right, is the easternmost star of Orion's belt.  The UV radiation from the star strips the electrons from the gas of the nebula, which glows as a result of the recombination that follows.  Dark patches of dust can be seen covering parts of the nebula.
